BLUE at a glance
BLUE is a 160-metre custom yacht built by Lürssen and delivered in 2022. The shipyard credits Terence Disdale Design with both the exterior and interior. What makes the propulsion concept significant
Lürssen describes BLUE’s propulsion as a diesel-electric hybrid system developed by its engineering specialists. The arrangement combines two propeller shafts with an electric azimuth pod drive. According to the shipyard, the pod can operate independently in electric mode or work with the shafts when the power-take-in units are engaged.
The importance is architectural rather than cosmetic. A hybrid arrangement gives the engineering team more than one way to generate and distribute propulsion power. Lürssen links that flexibility to lower noise and vibration, while the shipyard’s exhaust after-treatment system is intended to reduce nitrogen-oxide emissions. The official material does not publish a route-by-route consumption figure, so no numerical efficiency claim is made here.

The same studio shaped BLUE inside and out. Lürssen characterises the exterior as contemporary and the interior as traditional and fresh. That continuity matters on a yacht of this scale: exterior massing, circulation, glazing and interior planning have to read as one project even though the technical platform is exceptionally complex.
Publicly available shipyard information does not disclose the full accommodation plan, guest capacity or private spaces. Those details are therefore excluded from this overview.
Water and exhaust treatment
Beyond propulsion, Lürssen identifies two systems as part of BLUE’s environmental programme. An exhaust after-treatment installation is designed to reduce nitrogen-oxide levels. A wastewater plant uses membrane technology; the builder states that treated water can be discharged at drinking-water quality. This is a description of the installed systems, not a lifecycle assessment of the yacht.
What is verified — and what is not
This technical overview is deliberately bounded by the builder’s published record. Length, design attribution, propulsion architecture and the named treatment systems are verified against Lürssen. Speed, range, volume, price, ownership, operating cost and accommodation figures are not asserted because they are absent from the primary material used for this update.
